Preppy Fashion and Its Official Handbook Are Back!!!
When Target hones in on a trend, that trend is officially here to stay, in this case they are launching a fall collaboration with “Rowing Blazers”. Even the WSJ recently wrote about the soaring prices (if you can get your hands on one) of the now out-of-print “The Official Preppy Handbook”.
The popularity of preppy style can be traced back to Lisa Birnbach’s influential handbook, published in 1980. This satirical guidebook provided a tongue-in-cheek look at the fashion and lifestyle of the American preppy subculture.
Some key factors that have contributed to the enduring popularity of looking preppy:
Nostalgia and Classic Appeal: Preppy style is rooted in classic and timeless looks that are associated with Ivy League schools and affluent East Coast communities. These mainstay elements, such as polo shirts, boat shoes, blazers, and pearls, have an understated appeal that never goes out of fashion.
Universality: Preppy fashion is characterized by clean lines, simple silhouettes, and versatile elements. This renders it accessible to a wide range of people, regardless of age, gender, or body type.
Rebellion Against Trends: At its core, preppy fashion is a rejection of fleeting trends. It emphasizes quality over quantity, durability over disposability, and tradition over fads.
Iconic Brands: The Preppy Handbook introduced readers to iconic brands such as Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brothers, Lacoste, and Sperry. These names have continued to be influential in fashion, maintaining their status as core symbols of preppy style.
Adaptability: Preppy style can be easily mixed with other looks, allowing individuality and uniqueness, or adapted to either casual or dressy situations.
Subcultural Appeal: Preppy fashion is associated with a distinct subculture of privilege, education, and social status. This adds a layer of exclusivity and aspiration and makes it appeal to those who want to project a certain image or lifestyle.
Enduring Iconography: Certain preppy fashion staples, like the navy blazer, striped tie, or white oxford shirt, have become timeless symbols of style and sophistication. These iconic pieces continue to be favored by those seeking to look polished and put-together.
Reinterpretation: Over the years, preppy fashion has been updated to stay relevant. Fashion designers and brands have used the elements in their collections, giving the trend a contemporary twist while preserving its core values.
