Want to do a good deed that pays off more than you can imagine? Adopt a dog! This is easily achievable in NYC, even if you are an allergy sufferer like me and can only live with certain breeds.

Here are a few great resources:

Animal Care Centers of NYC: ACC operates animal shelters and provides adoption services for both mixed-breed and purebred dogs. (nycacc.org)
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals: The ASPCA has a variety of breeds for adoption, including purebreds (aspca.org/nyc/aspca-adoption-center).
Animal Rescue Organizations: Many rescue organizations in NYC specialize in dog adoptions including Bideawee (bideawee.org), Sean Casey Animal Rescue (www.nyanimalrescue.org), and Muddy Paws Rescue (www.muddypawsrescue.org).
Petfinder: Petfinder (petfinder.com) is an online database that allows you to search for adoptable pets nearby, filtering by breed, age, size, and other preferences.
Local Shelters: Full of mixed-breed dogs and purebred dogs too. The Humane Society of New York (humanesocietyny.org) and Animal Haven (www.animalhavenshelter.org) are two of the best.
